THE GREAT FLOOD SUBSIDES

And God remembered and thought kindly of Noah and every living thing and all the animals that were with him in the ark; and God made a wind blow over the land, and the waters receded.

Also the fountains of the deep [subterranean waters] and the windows of the heavens were closed, the [pouring] rain from the sky was restrained,

and the waters receded steadily from the earth. At the end of a hundred and fifty days the waters had diminished.

On the seventeenth day of the seventh month [five months after the rain began], the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat [in Turkey].

The waters continued to decrease until the tenth month; on the first day of the tenth month the tops of the mountains were seen.

At the end of [another] forty days Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made;

and he sent out a raven, which flew here and there until the waters were dried up from the earth.

Then Noah sent out a dove to see if the water level had fallen below the surface of the land.

But the dove found no place on which to rest the sole of her foot, and she returned to him to the ark, for the waters were [still] on the face of the entire earth. So he reached out his hand and took the dove, and brought her into the ark.

He waited another seven days and again sent the dove out from the ark.

The dove came back to him in the evening, and there, in her beak, was a fresh olive leaf. So Noah knew that the water level had subsided from the earth.

Then he waited another seven days and sent out the dove, but she did not return to him again.

Now in the six hundred and first year [of Noah’s life], on the first day of the first month, the waters were drying up from the earth. Then Noah removed the covering of the ark and looked, and the surface of the ground was drying.

On the twenty-seventh day of the second month the land was [entirely] dry.

And God spoke to Noah, saying,

“Go out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and their wives with you.

Bring out with you every living thing from all flesh–birds and animals and every crawling thing that crawls on the earth–that they may breed abundantly on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.”

So Noah went out, and his wife and his sons and their wives with him [after being in the ark one year and ten days].

Every animal, every crawling thing, every bird–and whatever moves on the land–went out by families (types, groupings) from the ark.

GOD’S COVENANT WITH NOAH

And Noah built an altar to the LORD, and took of every [ceremonially] clean animal and of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar.

The LORD smelled the pleasing aroma [a soothing, satisfying scent] and the LORD said to Himself, “I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intent (strong inclination, desire) of man’s heart is wicked from his youth; and I will never again destroy every living thing, as I have done.

“While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, Cold and heat, Winter and summer, And day and night Shall not cease.”

The waters covered [all of] the earth for a hundred and fifty days (five months).

NOAH LEAVES THE ARK

Traditions of the Flood are found in every country, from the tablets of Babylon to the rude carvings of the Aztecs, proving man’s common origin. “God remembered Noah.” He could not forget, because He had entered into covenant with him and his. Though the floods have been abroad on your life for long years, God has not forgotten you. Sooner might a woman forget her babe! Noah’s window only looked upward. It had no outlook on the waters, therefore he sent forth the birds. Dove and raven issued from the same window, so the child of God and the wayward, willful child may issue from the same family; but the former cannot find satisfaction with what satisfies the other, but wings its flight back to God. See Psa_116:7. Through God’s grace Noah stepped out into the new world-the world of resurrection. His first act was the burned-offering of consecration, which was followed immediately by promise. See Rom_12:1-2.

Genesis 8:1-22

E. Widespread Sin and the Universal Flood (Chaps. 6-8)

8:1-19 The chronology of the flood is as follows:

1. 7 days — from the time Noah entered the ark until the flood began (Gen_7:10).

2. 40 days and nights — duration of the rain (Gen_7:12).

3. 150 days — from the time the rain began until the waters decreased (8:3) and the ark rested on Mount Ararat (compare Gen_7:11 and 8:4).

4. 224 days — from the beginning of the flood until the mountaintops reappeared (compare Gen_7:11 and 8:5).

5. 40 days — from the time the mountaintops were seen until Noah sent out a raven (8:7).

6. 7 days — from the sending of the raven to the first sending forth of a dove (8:6-10; v. 10, “yet another seven days”).

7. 7 more days — until the dove was sent forth a second time (8:10).

8. 7 more days — until the final sending forth of the dove.

9. 314 days — from the beginning of the flood until Noah removed the covering from the ark (compare Gen_7:11 and 8:13).

10. 371 days — from the beginning of the flood until the earth was dried (compare Gen_7:11 and Gen_8:14). At this time, Noah was commanded to go out of the ark (v. 16)

The unclean raven (v. 7) and the clean dove (v. 8) are good illustrations of the believer’s old and new natures. The old nature loves to feed on garbage and carrion whereas the new nature cannot find satisfaction in a scene of death and judgment. It finds no rest until it sets its feet on resurrection ground.

8:20-22 Noah responded to God’s saving grace by building an altar. Those of us who have been saved from the wrath to come should likewise bring to God our heartfelt worship. It is as acceptable and pleasing today as it was in Noah’s day. The LORD made a covenant that He would never again curse the ground or destroy every living thing, as He had done; also, He would provide regular seasons as long as the earth endured.

In Gen_6:5 and here in verse 21, God speaks of the intense evil of man’s heart. In the first instance, there was no sacrifice, and judgment ensued. Here there is a sacrifice; and God acts in mercy.
