Exodus 11:1-10

A FINAL PLAGUE THREATENED

Then the LORD said to Moses, “I will bring yet one more plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt; after that he will let you go. When he lets you go, he will most certainly drive you out of here completely.

Speak so that all of the people [of Israel] may hear, and tell every man to ask from his neighbor, and every woman to ask from her neighbor, articles of silver, and articles of gold.”

The LORD gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. Moreover, the man Moses was greatly esteemed in the land of Egypt, [both] in the sight of Pharaoh’s servants and in the sight of the people.

Then Moses said, “Thus says the LORD: ‘At midnight I am going out into the midst of Egypt,

and all the firstborn in the land [the pride, hope, and joy] of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne, to the firstborn of the slave girl who is behind the hand-mill, and all the firstborn of cattle as well.

There shall be a great cry [of heartache and sorrow] throughout the land of Egypt, such as has never been before and such as shall never be again.

But not even a dog will threaten any of the Israelites, whether man or animal, so that you may know [without any doubt] and acknowledge how the LORD makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.’

All these servants of yours will come down to me and bow down before me, saying, ‘Get out, you and all the people who follow you.’ After that I will leave.” And he left Pharaoh in the heat of anger.

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Pharaoh will not listen to you, so that My wonders (miracles) may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.”

Moses and Aaron did all these wonders (miracles) before Pharaoh; yet the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not let the Israelites go out of his land.

Exodus 11:1-10

THE DEATH OF THE FIRST-BORN THREATENED

“One plague more.” These are ominous words! This final act of judgment would smite the fetters from Israel’s neck forever. It is vain for man to enter into conflict with God. God does not crush him at once, because He is long-suffering and forgiving. See 2Pe_3:9. But if man persists, the inevitable blow falls. See Psa_7:12. The word borrow is better rendered ask, Exo_11:2, R.V. The Hebrew phrase has no suggestion of a return being expected. This was befitting payment for their long and unrewarded labor.

The great cry, Exo_11:6, recalls the piercing wail that rings through an eastern home when death takes place. The world shall hear one other such cry, as we learn from Rev_1:7. There is no difference between God’s people and others when sin is concerned. All have come short of God’s glory. Nor is there difference in His redeeming grace. But there is all the difference between those who shelter under the blood of the Lamb and those who refuse.

IV. MOSES’ CONFRONTATIONS WITH PHARAOH (5:1–7:13)

VI. THE PASSOVER AND THE DEATH OF THE FIRSTBORN (11:1–12:30)

11:1-10 Moses had not yet departed from Pharaoh’s presence. In verses 4-8 he is still speaking to the ruler. The first three verses may be thought of as a parenthesis. In view of the tenth and final plague, God told Moses to have the Israelites ask (not “borrow,” as in KJV) for gold and silver articles from the Egyptians. Moses warned Pharaoh that all the firstborn . . . of Egypt would be slain at midnight of the appointed date (see Exo_12:6), that the Israelites would not be affected by the slaughter, and that Pharaoh’s officials would bow down, begging the Hebrews to leave at once and en masse. Then Moses left the potentate in great anger. The warning fell on deaf ears, and the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart still more.
