ABRAM AND LOT SEPARATE

Abram And Lot Separate. So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife and disagreement between you and me, nor between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, because we are relatives.

Is not the entire land before you? Please separate [yourself] from me. If you take the left, then I will go to the right; or if you choose the right, then I will go to the left.” Gen 13:8-9

20. Why was it best for Abram to separate from Lot?

Genesis 13:1-13

ABRAM AND LOT SEPARATE

So Abram went up out of Egypt, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot [his nephew] with him, into the Negev (the South country of Judah).

Now Abram was extremely rich in livestock and in silver and in gold.

He journeyed on from the Negev as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai,

where he had first built an altar; and there Abram called on the name of the LORD [in prayer]. [Gal_3:6-9]

But Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents.

Now the land was not able to support them [that is, sustain all their grazing and water needs] while they lived near one another, for their possessions were too great for them to stay together.

And there was strife and quarreling between the herdsmen of Abram’s cattle and the herdsmen of Lot’s cattle. Now the Canaanite and the Perizzite were living in the land at that same time [making grazing of the livestock difficult].

So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife and disagreement between you and me, nor between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, because we are relatives.

Is not the entire land before you? Please separate [yourself] from me. If you take the left, then I will go to the right; or if you choose the right, then I will go to the left.”

So Lot looked and saw that the valley of the Jordan was well watered everywhere–this was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah; [it was all] like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as you go to Zoar [at the south end of the Dead Sea].

Then Lot chose for himself all the valley of the Jordan, and he traveled east. So they separated from each other.

Abram settled in the land of Canaan, and Lot settled in the cities of the valley and camped as far as Sodom and lived there.

But the men of Sodom were extremely wicked and sinful against the LORD [unashamed in their open sin before Him].

ABRAM AND LOT PART

The patriarch, like a restored backslider, made his way back to the old spot, on the highlands of Bethel, where his first tent and altar had stood. Through his wanderings hitherto there had been a depressing element of worldliness in his camp, through the presence of Lot, who, like many more, was swept along by his uncle’s religion, but had little of his own. Feeling that separation was inevitable, and that God would surely care for him, Abram offered Lot his choice. See Psa_16:5. The younger man chose according to the sight of his eyes. In his judgment he gained the world-but see 2Pe_2:7-8. The world is full of Lots-shallow, impulsive, doomed to be revealed by their choice and end. “Let there be no strife!” Blessed are the peacemakers! Wherever the interests of peace can be conserved through the sacrifice of your own interests, be prepared to forfeit the advantage, but stand like a rock when God’s truth is in balance.

II. THE PATRIARCHS OF ISRAEL (Chaps. 12-50)

A. Abraham (12:1–25:18)

3. Experiences with Lot and Abimelech (13:5–14:24)

13:5-13 The herdsmen of Lot and Abram quarreled over pastureland for their flocks. In true courtesy, kindness, and unselfishness, Abram offered Lot his choice of all the land. In lowliness of mind, he esteemed others better than himself (Php_2:3). Lot chose the lush pastures of the Jordan Valley, adjacent to the sin-cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Though a true believer (2Pe_2:7-8), Lot was a world-borderer. As someone has said, “he got grass for his cattle while Abram got grace for his children” (vv. 15, 16).

The fact that the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the LORD didn’t restrain Lot in his choice. Notice the steps in his plunge into worldliness: He (his men) experienced strife (v. 7); he saw (v. 10); he chose (v. 11); he pitched his tent toward (v. 12); he resided away from the place where God’s priest was (Gen_14:12); he sat in the gate, the place of political power (Gen_19:1). He became a local official in Sodom.
