ABRAM AND LOT SEPARATE
The LORD said to Abram, after Lot had left him, “Now lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are standing, northward and southward and eastward and westward;
for all the land which you see I will give to you and to your descendants forever. [Act_7:5]
I will make your descendants [as numerous] as the dust of the earth, so that if a man could count the [grains of] dust of the earth, then your descendants could also be counted. [Gen_28:14]
Arise, walk (make a thorough reconnaissance) around in the land, through its length and its width, for I will give it to you.”
Then Abram broke camp and moved his tent, and came and settled by the [grove of the great] terebinths (oak trees) of Mamre [the Amorite], which are in Hebron, and there he built an altar to [honor] the LORD.
LOT TAKEN CAPTIVE
In the days of the [Eastern] kings Amraphel of Shinar, Arioch of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer of Elam, and Tidal of Goiim,
they [invaded the Jordan Valley near the Dead Sea, and] made war with Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).
All of these [kings] joined together [as allies] in the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Sea of Salt).
Twelve years they had served Chedorlaomer [the most powerful king in the invading confederacy], but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
In the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the [three] kings who were with him attacked and subdued the Rephaim in Ashteroth-karnaim, the Zuzim in Ham, and the Emim in Shaveh-kiriathaim,
and the Horites in their mountainous country of Seir, as far as El-paran, which is on the border of the wilderness.
Then they turned back and came to En-mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and subdued all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites who lived in Hazazon-tamar.
Then the kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim, and Bela (that is, Zoar) came out; and they joined together for battle with the invading kings in the Valley of Siddim,
against Chedorlaomer king of Elam and Tidal king of Goiim and Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar–four kings against five.
Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar (bitumen) pits; and as the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, they fell into them. But the remainder [of the kings] who survived fled to the hill country.
Then the victors took all the possessions of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food supply and provisions and left.
And they also took [captive] Lot, Abram’s nephew, and his possessions and left, for he was living in Sodom.

ABRAM AT HEBRON; LOT TAKEN CAPTIVE
Lot lifted up his eyes for himself, but when the last of Lot’s followers had streamed out of the camp, God bade Abram lift up his eyes, not to choose, but to behold what God had chosen for him. He must first estimate his possessions, and then enjoy them. Let us count up our treasures in Christ, and use them. Lot grasped at and lost his all. Abram left and inherited all. Notice how prodigal God’s provision is: “All the land… for ever… as the dust… the length and breadth.” It was a far cry from the valley of the Euphrates to Sodom, and the little confederate kings dared to rebel against Chedorlaomer, who swept over their lands like a sirocco, and marched up the valley of the Jordan, laden with booty, and carrying Lot. You cannot have the sweets of the world and miss its bitters. The path of separation is the only way of safety and peace!

13:14-18 Abram renounced the choicest pastureland, but God gave all the land of Canaan to him and to his descendants forever. In addition, the Lord promised him an innumerable posterity. After settling in Hebron, Abram . . . built his third altar . . . to the LORD—always an altar for God, but never a house for himself!
Notice that God instructed Abram to walk throughout the land and see his possession. So we are to appropriate God’s promises by faith.
14:1-12 Thirteen years before the main events of this chapter, Chedorlaomer, king of Elam (Persia), had conquered various kings in the plains adjacent to the Dead (Salt) Sea. In the thirteenth year, the five captive kings rebelled against Chedorlaomer. So he allied himself with three other kings from the region of Babylon, marched south along the eastern side of the Dead Sea, then north on the western side to Sodom, Gomorrah, and the other cities of the plain. The battle took place in the Valley of Siddim, which was full of asphalt pits. The invaders defeated the rebels and marched north with their booty and captives—including Lot, Abram’s backslidden nephew.
