BABEL AND CONFUSION OF TONGUES

The Tower of Babel. They said, “Come, let us build a city for ourselves, and a tower whose top will reach into the heavens, and let us make a [famous] name for ourselves, so that we will not be scattered [into separate groups] and be dispersed over the surface of the entire earth [as the LORD instructed].” [Gen_9:1] .Gen 11:4

Genesis 11:1-9

THE TOWER OF BABEL

Now the whole earth spoke one language and used the same words (vocabulary).

And as people journeyed eastward, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and they settled there. [Gen_10:10]

They said one to another, “Come, let us make bricks and fire them thoroughly [in a kiln, to harden and strengthen them].” So they used brick for stone [as building material], and they used tar (bitumen, asphalt) for mortar.

They said, “Come, let us build a city for ourselves, and a tower whose top will reach into the heavens, and let us make a [famous] name for ourselves, so that we will not be scattered [into separate groups] and be dispersed over the surface of the entire earth [as the LORD instructed].” [Gen_9:1]

Now the LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.

And the LORD said, “Behold, they are one [unified] people, and they all have the same language. This is only the beginning of what they will do [in rebellion against Me], and now no evil thing they imagine they can do will be impossible for them.

Come, let Us (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) go down and there confuse and mix up their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”

So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the surface of the entire earth; and they stopped building the city.

Therefore the name of the city was Babel–because there the LORD confused the language of the entire earth; and from that place the LORD scattered and dispersed them over the surface of all the earth.

THE CONFUSION OF TONGUES

Driven by the fear of another deluge, though God had given distinct assurances to the contrary, and impelled by the desire to perpetuate their name and memory to coming generations, Noah’s descendants began to build on the plain of Shinar-a fertile valley watered by the Euphrates and Tigris. Babel, Babylon and Babylon the Great, such is the lineage of the apostasy which has ever opposed the Church of God; like a shadow, stealing along the wall at our side. To Babel we must oppose Abraham; to Babylon, Jerusalem; to Babylon the Great, the Bride, the Lamb’s wife. “Come out of her, my people,” is the cry that rings down the ages. God comes down to see! From him no secrets are hid. All things are naked and open to His eyes. The one language or lip refers to the pronunciation; speech to the stock of words; God touched the lips. When disunion prevails, destruction follows. But Pentecost and Heaven will undo the wreck of Babel. See Rev_7:9.

H. The Tower of Babel (Chap. 11)

11:1-4 In chapter 10, which chronologically comes after chapter 11, mankind was divided according to languages (vv. 5, 20, 31). Now we learn the cause of the divisions. Instead of dispersing over the earth, as God, intended, men built a city and a tower in Shinar (Babylon). They said to one another, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make us a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.” So it was a policy of pride (to make a name for themselves) and defiance (to avoid being scattered). To us the tower may also picture fallen man’s ceaseless effort to reach heaven by his own works instead of receiving salvation as a free gift of grace.

11:5-9 The LORD judged the people by confounding their language. This was the beginning of the many different languages which we have in the world today. Pentecost (Act_2:1-11) was the reverse of Babel in the sense that every man heard the wonderful works of God in his own language. Babel means confusion, the inevitable result of any union that leaves God out or is not according to God.
