GOD’S PROMISES OVERCOME MOSES’ RELUCTANCE

God’s Promises Overcome Moses’ Reluctance. Then the anger of the LORD was kindled and burned against Moses; He said, “Is there not your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know that he speaks fluently. Also, he is coming out to meet you, and when he sees you, he will be overjoyed.  Exo 4:10-17

MOSES GIVEN POWERFUL SIGNS

Then Moses said to the LORD, “Please, Lord, I am not a man of words (eloquent, fluent), neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant; for I am slow of speech and tongue.”

The LORD said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes the mute or the deaf, or the seeing or the blind? Is it not I, the LORD?

Now then go, and I, even I, will be with your mouth, and will teach you what you shall say.”

But he said, “Please my Lord, send the message [of rescue to Israel] by [someone else,] whomever else You will [choose].”

Then the anger of the LORD was kindled and burned against Moses; He said, “Is there not your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know that he speaks fluently. Also, he is coming out to meet you, and when he sees you, he will be overjoyed.

You must speak to him and put the words in his mouth; I, even I, will be with your mouth and with his mouth, and I will teach you what you are to do.

Moreover, he shall speak for you to the people; he will act as a mouthpiece for you, and you will be as God to him [telling him what I say to you].

You shall take in your hand this staff, with which you shall perform the signs [the miracles which prove I sent you].”

GOD’S PROMISES OVERCOME MOSES’ RELUCTANCE

To Moses’ second misgiving God made a promise of exceeding beauty, which all who speak for God should consider. Compare Exo_4:12 with Jer_1:7-9 and 1Co_2:4. If we looked at our natural powers as Paul used to do, we should glory in our lack of eloquence, as affording a better platform on which God might work. See 2Co_12:9-10.

In answer to the third misgiving God gave him his brother as assistant. Indeed, he was already on his way; but he was a weak man, and gave to Moses a great amount of anxiety and pain in their afterlife. After all, it is best for a man to lean only on God for counsel and ready help. If we step forth with this supreme alliance, we shall escape the hampering association with Aarons. We may as well get all we need at first-hand.

III. THE CALL OF MOSES (Chaps. 3, 4)

B. The Reluctance of Moses (4:1-17)

4 4:10-17 Moses was still reluctant to obey the LORD, excusing himself because he was not eloquent. After reminding Moses that the Lord made man’s mouth, and therefore could make him eloquent, God appointed Aaron, Moses’ brother, to speak for him. Moses should have obeyed the Lord in simple dependence, knowing that His commands are His enablements. God never asks us to do anything without giving us the power to do it. Because Moses was not satisfied with God’s best, he had to take God’s second best—that is, having Aaron as his spokesman. Moses thought that Aaron would be a help, but he later proved to be a hindrance in leading the people to worship the golden calf (chap. 32).
