ISAAC’S BIRTH PROMISED BY GOD

Isaac’s Birth Promised. hen God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai (my princess), but her name will be Sarah (Princess).

I will bless her, and indeed I will also give you a son by her. Yes, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.” Gen 17:15-17

Genesis 17:15-27

Isaac’s Birth Promised

Then God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai (my princess), but her name will be Sarah (Princess).

I will bless her, and indeed I will also give you a son by her. Yes, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.”

Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, “Shall a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?”

And Abraham said to God, “Oh, that Ishmael [my firstborn] might live before You!”

But God said, “No, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son indeed, and you shall name him Isaac (laughter); and I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant and with his descendants after him.

As for Ishmael, I have heard and listened to you; behold, I will bless him, and will make him fruitful and will greatly multiply him [through his descendants]. He will be the father of twelve princes (chieftains, sheiks), and I will make him a great nation. [Gen_25:12-18]

But My covenant [My promise, My solemn pledge], I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this time next year.”

And God finished speaking with him and went up from Abraham.

Then Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all the servants who were born in his house and all who were purchased with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s household, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin the very same day, as God had said to him.

So Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised.

And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised.

On the very same day Abraham was circumcised, as well as Ishmael his son.

All the men [servants] of his household, both those born in the house and those purchased with money from a foreigner, were circumcised along with him [as the sign of God’s covenant with Abraham].

ISAAC IS PROMISED

There are two allusions to laughter in these chapters. Sarah’s was the laugh of incredulity, see Gen_18:12; but Abraham’s was the laugh of happy confidence, which reckoned on God. As R.V. puts it, he looked his difficulties in the face, and then turned away to the promise of God, and wavered not, but waxed strong, giving glory to God. Ponder Rom_4:20-21. Therefore, he obtained promises for his wife, for Ishmael, and for the coming child, which was to bear the name of Laughter, partly because of that hour, and also because he would bring sunshine into the old man’s life. His heart had entwined about Ishmael. As he had watched the masterful and clever youth, he had said to himself, “He will hold the camp together when I am gone.” But the divine covenant could not be with one that had slave-blood in his veins and was not to abide in the house forever. See Joh_8:35; Gal_4:22. The covenant is always with Isaac.

II. THE PATRIARCHS OF ISRAEL (Chaps. 12-50)

A. Abraham (12:1–25:18)

17:15-17 God changed Sarai’s (my princess) name to Sarah (princess) and promised Abraham that his ninety-year-old wife would have a son. The patriarch laughed, but in joyful wonder, not in unbelief. His faith did not waver (Rom_4:18-21).

17:18-27 When Abraham pled that Ishmael might have favor before God, he was told that the covenant would be fulfilled through his son, Isaac. However, Ishmael would be fruitful, would multiply, and would become a great nation. Isaac was a symbol of Christ, through whom the covenant receives its ultimate fulfillment.

Notice the promptness of Abraham’s obedience: That very same day Abraham was circumcised, and his son Ishmael.
