JACOB’S DEATH AND BURIAL

All these are the [beginnings of the] twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them as he blessed them, blessing each one according to the blessing appropriate to him.

He charged them and said to them, “I am to be gathered to my people; bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite,

in the cave in the field at Machpelah, east of Mamre, in the land of Canaan, that Abraham bought, along with the field from Ephron the Hittite, to possess as a burial site. [Gen_23:17-20]

There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife, there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife, and there I buried Leah–

the field and the cave that is in it was purchased from the sons of Heth.”

When Jacob (Israel) had finished commanding his sons, he drew his feet into the bed and breathed his last, and was gathered to his people [who had preceded him in death].

Genesis 50:1-3

Then Joseph fell upon his father’s face, and wept over him and kissed him [tenderly].

Then Joseph ordered his servants the physicians to embalm (mummify) his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel (Jacob).

Now forty days were required for this, for that is the customary number of days [of preparation] required for embalming. And the Egyptians wept and grieved for him [in public mourning as they would for royalty] for seventy days.

JACOB’S LAST DIRECTIONS AND DEATH

Jacob gave a final charge as to his burial in Machpelah-that his dust at least should be there to welcome his children and children’s children, when they came thither in due course, as God had promised. Then the weary pilgrim gathered up those tired feet, which had paced out their last mile, into the bed, and gave up his spirit to God. When we are told that he was gathered to his people it must mean more than that his dust mingled with their dust in the place of burial. There are great gatherings of loving friends awaiting us on the other side. See Heb_11:40. At the ladder-scene in Bethel, God had told him that He would not leave him till He had done what He promised, and surely not one good thing had failed. Life may be hard and sad, but God will end it rightly. Be of good cheer and trust!

11. Jacob’s Prophecy Concerning His Sons (Chap. 49)

49:1, 2 Jacob’s last words were both a prophecy (v. 1) and a blessing (v. 28).

49:28-33 In closing, Jacob instructed his sons to bury him in the cave . . . of Machpelah, near his home in Hebron—the burial place of Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah, and Leah. Then he drew himself back into the bed and breathed his last.

12. Death of Jacob and Then of Joseph in Egypt (Chap. 50)50:1-14 Even the Egyptians mourned for . . . seventy days when Jacob died. His body was embalmed by the palace physicians. Then Pharaoh gave Joseph permission to accompany the body back to Canaan, with a great procession of officials, relatives, and servants. They stopped east of the Jordan and mourned for seven days so deeply that the Canaanites . . . called the place Abel Mizraim, the meadow (or mourning) of Egypt. Following the burial in the cave . . . of Machpelah at Hebron, Joseph and his entourage returned to Egypt.
