GOD’S GOOD PURPOSES

Genesis 50:15-26

When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “What if Joseph carries a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong which we did to him?”

So they sent word to Joseph, saying, “Your father commanded us before he died, saying,

‘You are to say to Joseph, “I beg you, please forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sin, for they did you wrong.”‘ Now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” And Joseph wept when they spoke to him.

Then his brothers went and fell down before him [in confession]; then they said, “Behold, we are your servants (slaves).”

Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God? [Vengeance is His, not mine.]

G for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present outcome, that many people would be kept alive [as they are this day].

So now, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and support you and your little ones.” So he comforted them [giving them encouragement and hope] and spoke [with kindness] to their hearts.

THE DEATH OF JOSEPH

Now Joseph lived in Egypt, he and his father’s household, and Joseph lived a hundred and ten years.

Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim’s children; also the children of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were born and raised on Joseph’s knees.

Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die, but God will surely take care of you and bring you up out of this land to the land which He promised to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob [to give you].”

Then Joseph made the sons of Israel (Jacob) swear [an oath], saying, “God will surely visit you and take care of you [returning you to Canaan], and [when that happens] you shall

So Joseph died, being a hundred and ten years old; and they embalmed him and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.

JOSEPH LOVES UNTIL HIS DEATH

The fear of Joseph’s brethren illustrates the insecurity of a position which is conceded only at the bidding of the tender caprice of love, apart from satisfaction based on satisfied justice. As Joseph had pardoned, so he might retract his pardon. No satisfaction, beyond tears, had been rendered for that faraway sin. Might he not even now require it! So fears might legitimately arise in our own hearts, had not the divine forgiveness been based on the finished work of the Cross!

How significant that sentence: “God meant it for good!” There are meanings in life. Things do not happen by chance, and what happens is meant for good. All things work together for good for them that love God. Ninety-three years had passed since he was lifted from the pit; sixty since he buried his father. Finally Joseph’s end came. His bones were not buried, but awaited the summons for the Exodus. That coffin seemed to be the end of all. Nay! it was the seed of the coming harvest.

12. Death of Jacob and Then of Joseph in Egypt (Chap. 50)

50:15-21 Now that Jacob was dead, Joseph’s brothers feared that he might seek vengeance on them, They sent word to him, claiming that their father Jacob had left word that Joseph should forgive them. Joseph disclaimed any intent to seek revenge or to judge, since that was God’s prerogative. He further relieved their fears with the memorable words, “You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good . . .”

50:22-26 Joseph was apparently the first of the twelve sons of Jacob to die. This was fifty-four years after his father’s death. His faith that God would take the people of Israel back to Canaan is eulogized in Heb_11:22. He gave instructions that his bones be buried in that land.

It has been pointed out that Genesis opens with God’s perfect creation and closes with a coffin in Egypt. It is a book of biographies. Whereas two chapters are devoted to an account of the creation of the heavens and earth, forty-eight chapters are largely concerned with the lives of men and women. God is interested primarily in people. What a comfort and challenge to those who know Him!

This brings us to the end of the Bible Book of Genesis, next is Exodus.
