JUDGMENT ON FALSE TEACHERS

Judgment on False Teachers. Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I was compelled to write to you [urgently] appealing that you fight strenuously for [the defense of] the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints [the faith that is the sum of Christian belief that was given verbally to believers]. Jude 1:3

OUTLINE OF THE EPISTLE OF JUDE

INTRODUCTION

The James mentioned in Jud_1:1 is almost certainly the brother of our Lord, who was the well-known and universally revered leader of the mother church at Jerusalem, and the writer of the Epistle that bears his name. Jude, therefore, was also related to our Lord as brother; see Mat_13:55; Mar_6:3. These two were probably with the Apostles after the Ascension, and finally engaged in evangelistic efforts. See Act_1:14; 1Co_9:5.

We have no certain information concerning him, but Eusebius states that when Domitian ordered all the posterity of David to be slain, “some of the heretics accused the descendants of Jude, as the brother of our Savior according to the flesh, because they were of the family of David, and as such were also related to Christ.” It appears from the historian’s subsequent statement that these people made a good confession before their persecutors.

The Epistle was probably addressed to churches eastward of Judaea, among whom Jude had labored; and was probably written about A.D. 66. There are remarkable similarities between this Epistle and II Peter, indicating close communication between the two writers, as they looked out on the heretical teachers of the age and the low state of prevailing morals.

Jude 1:1-11

GREETING

Jude, a bond-servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, [writes this letter], To those who are the called (God’s chosen ones, the elect), dearly loved by God the Father, and kept [secure and set apart] for Jesus Christ:

May mercy and peace and love be multiplied to you [filling your heart with the spiritual well-being and serenity experienced by those who walk closely with God].

JUDGMENT ON FALSE TEACHERS

Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I was compelled to write to you [urgently] appealing that you fight strenuously for [the defense of] the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints [the faith that is the sum of Christian belief that was given verbally to believers].

For certain people have crept in unnoticed [just as if they were sneaking in by a side door]. They are ungodly persons whose condemnation was predicted long ago, for they distort the grace of our God into decadence and immoral freedom [viewing it as an opportunity to do whatever they want], and deny and disown our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Now I want to remind you, although you are fully informed once for all, that the Lord, after saving a people out of the land of Egypt, subsequently destroyed those who did not believe [who refused to trust and obey and rely on Him]. [Num_14:27-37]

And angels who did not keep their own designated place of power, but abandoned their proper dwelling place, [these] He has kept in eternal chains under [the thick gloom of utter] darkness for the judgment of the great day,

just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the adjacent cities, since they in the same way as these angels indulged in gross immoral freedom and unnatural vice and sensual perversity. They are exhibited [in plain sight] as an example in undergoing the punishment of everlasting fire. [Gen_19:1-29]

Nevertheless in the same way, these dreamers [who are dreaming that God will not punish them] also defile the body, and reject [legitimate] authority, and revile and mock angelic majesties.

But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil (Satan), and arguing about the body of Moses, did not dare bring an abusive condemnation against him, but [simply] said, “The Lord rebuke you!” [Deu_34:5-6; Zec_3:2]

But these men sneer at anything which they do not understand; and whatever they do know by [mere] instinct, like unreasoning and irrational beasts–by these things they are destroyed.

Woe to them! For they have gone the [defiant] way of Cain, and for profit they have run headlong into the error of Balaam, and perished in the rebellion of [mutinous] Korah. [Gen_4:3-8; Num_16:22-24; 2Pe_2:15]

“CONTEND EARNESTLY FOR THE FAITH”

Kept is the keynote of this Epistle. It occurs in Jud_1:1; Jud_1:6; Jud_1:21, and in another form in Jud_1:24. Many evil doctrines and practices were intruding into the Church. Certain persons had crept in, who quoted the mercy of God as an excuse for immorality and practically disowned the teachings of the Lord Jesus.

In contrast with these were the disciples whom Jude addresses and who owned the Lord Jesus as their beloved “Despot,” (the Greek for Master, Jud_1:4, R.V.) They were kept for him, as the others were kept in chains. Let us also keep ourselves in the love of God, Jud_1:21. It is much easier to live consistently in hours of storm than in hours of ease.

Let us be warned against drifting back from our first faith. Let us take heed from the fate of fallen angels, of Sodom and Gomorrah, of Cain and Balaam, of Korah and others. Let us watch and pray and earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints, Jud_1:3, bearing it through the world as the pilgrim host bore the sacred vessels in the days of Ezra. See Ezr_8:28.
