LOT AND HIS DAUGHTERS RESCUED
Now Lot went up from Zoar, and lived in the mountain together with his two daughters, for he was afraid to stay [any longer] in Zoar; and he lived in a cave with his two daughters.
The firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is aging, and there is not a man on earth [available] to be intimate with us in the customary way [so that we may have children].
Come, let us make our father drunk with wine, and we will lie with him so that we may preserve our family through our father.”
So they gave their father wine that night, and the firstborn went in and lay with her father; and he did not know when she lay down or when she got up [because he was completely intoxicated].
Then the next day, the firstborn said to the younger, “Behold, I lay with my father last night; let us make him drunk with wine tonight also, and then you go in and lie with him, so that we may preserve our family through our father.”
So they gave their father wine that night also, and the younger got up and lay with him; and again he did not know when she lay down or when she got up.
Thus both the daughters of Lot conceived by their father.
The firstborn gave birth to a son, and named him Moab (from father); he is the father of the Moabites to this day.
The younger also gave birth to a son and named him Ben-ammi (son of my people); he is the father of the Ammonites to this day.

LOT AND HIS DAUGHTERS RESCUED
God had mercy on Lot for Abraham’s sake. A missionary told me that when, on writing home to his mother, he narrated his miraculous deliverance from an infuriated mob, she replied by quoting a special entry in her diary to the effect that, during those exact hours, she was detained before God in a perfect agony of intercession for him. Lot was saved from Sodom, but took Sodom with him. He was saved so as by fire, but his life-work was burned up. See 1Co_3:15. Even his wife might have been saved, but her heart was inveterately wedded to the city. In modern cities there are traces of the sins that doomed Sodom. Let us bear witness against them, that we may arrest inevitable judgment. Jude tells us that in the fate of these cities we have an example of eternal fire. Have a place where you stand before God. Only from that eminence can you venture to look out on the awful retribution of human rebellion.

6. Sodom and Gomorrah (Chaps. 18, 19)
Though Lot’s wife left the city, her heart was still in it, and she fell under the judgment of God. In the words “Remember Lot’s wife” (Luk_17:32), Christ held her up as a warning to all who trifle with His offer of salvation.
19:30-38 Leaving Zoar, Lot fled to a mountain cave. There his daughters made him drunk and enticed him to commit incest with them. The older daughter subsequently bore a son named Moab, and the younger . . . bore a son, Ben-Ammi. Thus began the Moabites and Ammonites, who became recurring thorns in Israel’s side. It was Moabite women who later seduced the men of Israel to commit immorality (Num_25:1-3) and Ammonites who taught Israel the worship of Molech, including the sacrifice of children (1Ki_11:33; Jer_32:35). We know from 2Pe_2:7-8 that Lot was a just man, but because of his worldliness he lost his testimony (v. 14), his wife (v. 26), his sons-in-law, his friends, his communion (there was none in Sodom), his property (he went in rich but came out poor), his character (v. 35), his life’s work, and nearly his life (v. 22). The depraved behavior of his daughters shows that they had been influenced by Sodom’s vile standards. There is no escape (Heb_2:3).
