Exodus 15:1-18

THE SONG OF MOSES

Then Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to the LORD, singing, “I will sing to the LORD, for He has triumphed gloriously; The horse and its rider He has thrown into the sea.

“The LORD is my strength and my song, And He has become my salvation; This is my God, and I will praise Him; My father’s God, and I will exalt Him.

“The LORD is a warrior; The LORD is His name.

“Pharaoh’s chariots and his army He has thrown into the sea; His chosen captains are drowned in the Red Sea.

“The deep [water] covers them; [Clad in armor] they sank into the depths like a stone.

“Your right hand, O LORD, is glorious in power; Your right hand, O LORD, shatters the enemy.

“In the greatness of Your majesty You overthrow and annihilate those [adversaries] who rise [in rebellion] against You; You send out Your fury, and it consumes them like chaff.

“With the blast of Your nostrils the waters piled up, The flowing waters stood up like a mound; The deeps were congealed in the heart of the sea.

“The enemy said, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil; My desire shall be satisfied against them; I will draw my sword, my hand shall dispossess them and drive them out.’

“You blew with Your wind, the sea covered them; [Clad in armor] they sank like lead in the mighty waters.

“Who is like You among the gods, O LORD? Who is like You, majestic in holiness, Awesome in splendor, working wonders?

“You stretched out Your right hand, The sea swallowed them.

“You in Your lovingkindness and goodness have led the people whom You have redeemed; In Your strength You have guided them with care to Your holy habitation.

“The peoples have heard [about You], they tremble; Anguish and fear has gripped the inhabitants of Philistia.

“Then the [tribal] chiefs of Edom were dismayed and horrified; The [mighty] leaders of Moab, trembling grips them; All the inhabitants of Canaan have melted away [in despair]–

Terror and dread fall on them; Because of the greatness of Your arm they are as still as a stone; Until Your people pass by and [into Canaan], O LORD, Until the people pass by whom You have purchased.

“You will bring them [into the land of promise] and plant them on the mountain (Mt. Moriah in Jerusalem) of Your inheritance, The place, O LORD, You have made for Your dwelling [among them], The sanctuary, O Lord, which Your hands have established.

“The LORD shall reign to eternity and beyond.”

Exodus 15:1-18

MOSES’ SONG OF PRAISE TO JEHOVAH

This sublime ode falls into three divisions. We learn, first, what God is: strength in the day of battle; song in victory; salvation always. He is the God of our fathers, and our own; the mighty champion of His people. Notice that the Spirit of Inspiration gives but a line or two to Israel’s murmurings, but records this happy song with elaborate care. Praise is comely!

We discover, second, what God is to His foes. They are covered by the engulfing waves of destruction. As well might thorns fight fire as a man succeed against God.

We are taught, third, what God does for His friends. He leads forth the people whom He has redeemed. He guides them in His strength to their home. He who brought them out brings them in, and plants them in the place He has prepared. Claim that He should do this for you. He who brought you out from Egypt can bring you into Canaan.

VII. THE EXODUS FROM EGYPT (12:31–15:21)

C. The Song of Moses (15:1-21)

Just as the Passover speaks of redemption by blood, the Red Sea tells of redemption by power. The song of Moses celebrates the latter. Dr. H. C. Woodring outlined it as follows:

Prelude (v. 1)—The triumph of Jehovah.

Stanza 1 (vv. 2, 3)—What He is: strength, song, salvation.

Stanza 2 (vv. 4-13)—What He has done: victory over past enemies, deliverance of His people from Egypt.

Stanza 3 (vv. 14-18)—What He will do: victory over future enemies; bring His people into their inheritance.

Postlude (v. 19)—Contrast of the defeat of Egypt and the deliverance of Israel.

Antiphonal response by Miriam and all the women (vv. 20, 21).

Nearly three centuries ago the English commentator Matthew Henry expressed his appreciation and understanding of this great spiritual ode as follows:

We may observe respecting this song, that it is, (1.) An ancient song, the most ancient that we know of. (2.) A most admirable composition, the style lofty and magnificent, the images lively and proper, and the whole very moving. (3.) It is a holy song, consecrated to the honour of God, and intended to exalt his name and celebrate his praise, and his only, not in the least to magnify any man: holiness to the Lord is engraven on it, and to him they made melody in the singing of it. (4.) It is a typical song. The triumphs of the gospel church, in the downfall of its enemies, are expressed in the song of Moses and the song of the Lamb put together, which are said to be sung upon a sea of glass, as this was upon the Red Sea, Rev xv. 2, 3.
