MURMURING FOR FOOD REBUKED

Bread from Heaven. Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will cause bread to rain from heaven for you; the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, so that I may test them [to determine] whether or not they will walk [obediently] in My instruction (law).
And it shall be that on the sixth day, they shall prepare to bring in twice as much as they gather daily [so that they will not need to gather on the seventh day].” Exo 4-5

Exodus 16:1-12

BREAD FROM HEAVEN

They set out from Elim, and all the congregation of Israel came to the Wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they left the land of Egypt.

The whole congregation of the Israelites [grew discontented and] murmured and rebelled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness,

and the Israelites said to them, “Would that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat and ate bread until we were full; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this entire assembly with hunger.”

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will cause bread to rain from heaven for you; the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, so that I may test them [to determine] whether or not they will walk [obediently] in My instruction (law).

And it shall be that on the sixth day, they shall prepare to bring in twice as much as they gather daily [so that they will not need to gather on the seventh day].”

So Moses and Aaron said to all Israel, “At evening you shall know that the LORD has brought you out of the land of Egypt,

and in the morning you will see the glory of the LORD, for He hears your murmurings against the LORD. What are we, that you murmur and rebel against us?”

Moses said, “This will happen when the LORD gives you meat to eat in the evening, and in the morning [enough] bread to be fully satisfied, because the LORD has heard your murmurings against Him; for what are we? Your murmurings are not against us, but against the LORD.”

Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to all the congregation of Israel, ‘Approach the LORD, because He has heard your murmurings.'”

So it happened that as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of Israel, they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory and brilliance of the LORD appeared in the cloud!

Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

“I have heard the murmurings of the Israelites; speak to them, saying, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread; and you shall know that I am the LORD your God.'”

Exodus 16:1-12

MURMURING FOR FOOD REBUKED

Moses made a double promise to the Israelites in God’s name. In the evening they were to have flesh to eat, and in the morning bread to the full. But before these gifts could be received, notice must be taken of their conduct toward the two brothers, whose authority had been impugned by the events of the morning. Hence the appearance of the divine glory in the cloud, Exo_16:10. After this a vast flight of quails, a migratory bird which often crosses the Red Sea at this very spot, fell to the ground in the near neighborhood of the Hebrew camp, and lay there in an exhausted condition, which allowed of their being captured by the hand. How striking are those words: “The Lord heareth your murmurings!” We should remember them, when next we are tempted to doubt God’s love and to complain of His dealings with us. Let God’s faithful servants take courage; He will vindicate them.

Exodus 16:1-19

VIII. THE JOURNEY TO SINAI (15:22–18:27)

B. The Wilderness of Sin (Chap. 16)

16:1-19 Journeying to the southeast, the people came to the Wilderness of Sin. There they complained bitterly about the lack of food and sighed for the food of Egypt, seemingly forgetful of the terrible slavery that accompanied the food. God graciously responded by supplying plenty of quails at night and manna in the morning. The quails were provided only twice, here and in Num_11:31, whereas the manna was provided continuously. “Manna” means “What is it?” It was food miraculously provided by God; no attempts to explain it on a natural basis succeed. Manna was small, round, white, and sweet (v. 31), picturing the humility, perfection, purity, and sweetness of Christ, the Bread of God (Joh_6:48-51). Its arrival was somehow connected with the morning dew, reminding us that it is the Holy Spirit who ministers Christ to our souls. The Israelites were allowed to gather . . . one omer (about three pints) per person. No matter how much or how little they gathered, seeking to approximate an omer, they always had enough and never too much. This suggests the sufficiency of Christ to meet every need of all His people, and the results achieved when Christians share with those who are in need (2Co_8:15). The manna had to be gathered early in the morning, before the sun . . . melted it. So we should feed on Christ at the start of each day, before the pressures of life crowd in on us. It had to be gathered daily, just as we must feed daily on the Lord. It was to be gathered on the first six days of the week; none was provided on the seventh. On the sixth day the people were ordered to gather twice as much as on the other days, to tide them over the Sabbath.

If they left part of it on any other day, the manna bred worms and stank. Manna was like white coriander seed, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey. It could be baked or cooked. Moses rebuked those who went out to gather it on the Sabbath. End comment.

The Lords day.

See Matthew 12:6 Jesus is the LORD of the Sabbath, hence the 7th day Sabbath is the Lords Day since Creation.

Mat 12:8  For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

The 7th day Sabbath is the day of the Lord, the Lords Day.
