PROCLAIMING THE KINGDOM Miracles of Healing Pt 2.

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW

INTRODUCTION
There is no reason to doubt that this Gospel was written by Matthew. It presents the narrative of our Lord’s life from the standpoint of the pious Jew; and the evident design of the writer is to show how completely and continually our Lord fulfilled the Old Testament Scriptures. No other Gospel contains so many quotations from the Law, the Prophets and the Psalms. In it the predominant aspect of our Lord’s character and work is the Messianic. He was great David’s Greater Son. The keyword of the book is “Behold your King.” As King, His line is traced through the kingly race. As King, He proclaims the kingdom of heaven. As King, He promulgates the laws, describes the subjects, and announces the rewards of the Kingdom. When describing His own action at the last, when He sits on His throne and all nations are gathered before Him, He speaks of Himself as King, Mat_25:40. It was on His avowal of kingship that He was condemned to die. From every viewpoint this Gospel is one of the most precious documents in the world.

3. Miracles of Healing, Mat_8:1-34; Mat_9:1-35

NB !Note:

The Judean ministry of Jesus, which lasted almost one year, is not discussed by Matthew. This one year period is covered in John 1;1 to the end of John 4: and fits between Mat_4:11 and Mat_4:12. Matthew takes us from the temptation directly to the Galilean ministry.

Today we will look at the following questions in the outline.

24. What did Jesus say of the centurions faith? How did Peters wifes mother show gratitude to Jesus for her healing? What prophet foretold Christs healing ministry?

Matthew 8:10-17

The Faith of a Centurion

And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him,
And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented.
And Jesus saith unto him,

I will come and heal him.

The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.
For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.
When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed,

The answer to the question What did Jesus say of the centurions faith?

Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.
But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

And Jesus said unto the centurion,

Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee.

And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.

Jesus Heals Many

And when Jesus was come into Peter’s house, he saw his wife’s mother laid, and sick of a fever.

The answer to the question; How did Peter’s wife’s mother show gratitude to Jesus for her healing?

And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them.

When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:

The answer to question;  What prophet foretold Christ’s healing ministry?

That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.

Mat_8: 11-17

THE GREAT PHYSICIAN

A feast was the Hebrew conception of heaven. The Jews thought they were secure of it, because of their descent from Abraham. Grace is not hereditary; to receive it, every man has to exercise a personal faith in Christ. Let us see to it that our religion is absolutely true, lest it land us in hopeless disappointment.
Notice that faith is the measure of divine performance-as… so…. Our Lord can deliver from the fever-heat of passion and make the soul calm, quiet and pure. It was a wonderful thing that the patient could at once arise and minister in Peter’s humble home to their great Guest, but it is even more wonderful when a helpless spirit suddenly emerges from the dominion of passion into strength and beauty.
The key to all true service is furnished in Mat_8:17. We must take to ourselves the infirmities, sorrows and sins of those whom we would really help. This is the law of Christ, Gal_6:1-4.

Mat_8:11-17

D. Power over Demons and Various Sicknesses (8:16, 17)

At evening, when the Sabbath was over (see Mar_1:21-34), the people surged to Him with many victims of demon-possession. These pathetic individuals were indwelt and controlled by evil spirits. Often they exhibited superhuman knowledge and power; at other times they were tormented. Their behavior sometimes resembled that of insane persons, but the cause was demonic rather than physical or mental. Jesus cast out the spirits with a word.
He also healed all who were sick, fulfilling the prophecy of Isa_53:4 : “He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses.” Verse 17 is often used by faith-healers to show that healing is in the atonement, and that therefore physical healing is something the believer can claim by faith. But here the Spirit of God applies the prophecy to our Savior’s earthly healing ministry and not to His work on the cross.
So far in this chapter we have seen four miracles as follows:
1. Healing of the Jewish leper, with Christ present.
2. Healing of the centurion’s servant, with Christ at a distance.
3. Healing of Peter’s mother-in-law, with Jesus there in the house.
4. Healing of all the demon-possessed and sick, with Jesus present.

WE ARE STUDYING THE FOUR GOSPELS MATTHEW, MARK, LUKE AND JOHN TO KNOW THE LORD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST.
TO KNOW HIM IS TO LOVE HIM.
