Proclaiming The Kingdom The Beginning of the Galilean Ministry Pt 1.

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW

INTRODUCTION

There is no reason to doubt that this Gospel was written by Matthew. It presents the narrative of our Lord’s life from the standpoint of the pious Jew; and the evident design of the writer is to show how completely and continually our Lord fulfilled the Old Testament Scriptures. No other Gospel contains so many quotations from the Law, the Prophets and the Psalms. In it the predominant aspect of our Lord’s character and work is the Messianic. He was great David’s Greater Son. The keyword of the book is “Behold your King.” As King, His line is traced through the kingly race. As King, He proclaims the kingdom of heaven. As King, He promulgates the laws, describes the subjects, and announces the rewards of the Kingdom. When describing His own action at the last, when He sits on His throne and all nations are gathered before Him, He speaks of Himself as King, Mat_25:40. It was on His avowal of kingship that He was condemned to die. From every viewpoint this Gospel is one of the most precious documents in the world.

{e-Sword Note: The following material was presented at the end of Matthew in the printed edition}

NB !Note:The Judean ministry of Jesus, which lasted almost one year, is not discussed by Matthew. This one year period is covered in John 1;1 to the end of John 4: and fits between Mat_4:11 and Mat_4:12. Matthew takes us from the temptation directly to the Galilean ministry.

II. PROCLAIMING THE KINGDOM

Matthew 4:12 to Matthew 16:12

Today we will look at the following questions in the outline.

9. What is meant by “the kingdom of heaven?”

Mat_4:12-17

Jesus Begins His Ministry

Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;
And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim:
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;
The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.
From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say,

Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

John the Baptist said the same worlds in his sermons, see

Matthew 3:1-2

In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, And saying,

Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

THE LIGHT BEGINS TO SHINE

Our Lord’s earliest ministry seems to have been centered in Jerusalem and its contiguous villages. See Joh_2:1-25; Joh_3:1-36. But on the news of the Baptist’s imprisonment,

The answer to question 9 as explained by F.B.Meyer.

He took up His testimony to the hearers of the heavenly kingdom, which is the reign of God over the hearts and lives of men. Someone has said that it is “the universal awareness of God.” Yet there was a difference! At the commencement of His work, the Savior showed a tenderness and a winsomeness which were very inviting to the crowds of harried sheep. See Mat_9:36. His ministry resembled the gentle, holy dawn that breaks over the mountains and dispels the black shadows of the night. The evangelist quotes the prophet’s anticipation of the coming of Him who is called “Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God.” Oh, do not be afraid when Jesus comes to your heart! You may be as far away from goodness and purity as Naphtali and Zebulun from Jerusalem, but Galilee of the Gentiles is included in Joh_3:16.

D. Jesus Begins His Galilean Ministry (4:12-17)

4:12 When Jesus heard that John the Baptist had been put in prison, He realized that this was an omen of His own rejection. In rejecting the King’s forerunner  (John the Baptist was the forerunner), the people were, for all practical purposes, rejecting the King also. But it was not fear that drove Him north to Galilee. Actually He was going right into the center of Herod’s kingdom—the same king who had just imprisoned John. In moving to Galilee of the Gentiles, He was showing that His rejection by the Jews would result in the gospel going out to the Gentiles.

4:13 Jesus remained in Nazareth until the populace tried to kill Him for proclaiming salvation for the Gentiles (see Luk_4:16-30). Then He moved to Capernaum by the Sea of Galilee, an area originally populated by the tribes of Zebulun and Napthali. From this time, Capernaum became His headquarters.

4:14-16 Jesus’ move to Galilee was a fulfillment of Isa_9:1-2. The ignorant, superstitious Gentiles living in Galilee saw a great light—that is Christ, the Light of the world.

4:17 From then on Jesus took up the message which John had preached: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” It was a further call for moral renewal in preparation for His kingdom. The kingdom was near in the sense that the King was present.
