A FARMER CALLED TO BE DELIVERER
A farmer called to be deliverer. Now the Angel of the LORD came and sat under the terebinth tree at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, and his son Gideon was beating wheat in the wine press [instead of the threshing floor] to [hide it and] save it from the Midianites.
And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him and said to him, “The LORD is with you, O brave man.”
AT THE MERCY OF MIDIAN
At the mercy of Midian. Then the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD gave them into the hand of Midian for seven years.

THE SONG OF DEBORAH AND BARAK
The Song of Deborah and Barak. Then Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam sang on that day, saying,
“For the leaders who took the lead in Israel, For the people who volunteered [for battle], Bless the LORD!
“Hear, O kings; listen, O rulers! I will sing to the LORD, I will sing praise to the LORD, the God of Israel.
JAEL WITH A HAMMER AND TENT PEG
Jael with a hammer and tent peg. But Jael, Heber’s wife, took a tent peg and a hammer in her hand, and came up quietly to him and drove the peg through his temple, and it went through into the ground; for he was sound asleep and exhausted. So he died.
DEBORAH AND BARAK AS JUDGES
Deborah and Barak. Now she sent word and summoned Barak the son of Abinoam from Kedesh-naphtali, and said to him, “Behold, the LORD, the God of Israel, has commanded, ‘Go and march to Mount Tabor, and take with you ten thousand men [of war] from the tribes of Naphtali and Zebulun.
THE “MESSAGE FORM GOD”
The “message from God”. Ehud came to him as he was sitting alone in his [private] cool upper chamber, and Ehud said, “I have a message from God for you.” And the king got up from his seat.
DELIVERD FROM MESOPOTAMIAN OPPRESION
Delivered from mesopotamian oppression. the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and He sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the Israelites served Cushan-rishathaim eight years.
ISRAEL’S UNFAITHFULNESS
Israel’s Unfaithfulness. Then the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD and worshiped and served the Baals,
and they abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt. They followed other gods from the gods of the peoples who were around them, and they bowed down to them, and offended and provoked the LORD to anger.
FLAGGING IN THEIR GREAT TASK
Flagging in their great task. But [the tribe of] Manasseh did not take possession of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; so the Canaanites remained in that land.
