David Spares Saul’s Life. He said to his men, “The LORD forbid that I should do this thing to my master, the LORD’S anointed, to put out my hand against him, since he is the anointed of the LORD.”
A RELENTLESS PURSUIT FOILED
A Relentless Pursuit Foiled. But a messenger came to Saul, saying, “Hurry and come, because the Philistines have attacked the land.” So Saul returned from pursuing David and went to meet the Philistines; therefore they called that place the Rock of Escape.
THE SIGN OF THE ARROW
The Sign Of The Arrow. When the boy came to the place where Jonathan had shot the arrow, Jonathan called to him, “Is the arrow not beyond you?”
PROSPERED IN SPITE OF PLOTS
Prospered In Spite Of Plots. Then the Philistine commanders (princes) came out to battle, and it happened as often as they did, that David acted more wisely and had more success than all Saul’s servants. So his name was highly esteemed.
DAVID TRUSTS HIS FORMER DELIVERER
David Trusts His Former Deliverer. David said, “The LORD who rescued me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and may the LORD be with you.”
DAVID UNAWED BY THE GIANT
David Unawed By The Giant. Then David spoke to the men who were standing by him, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes the disgrace [of his taunting] from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he has taunted and defied the armies of the living God?”
THE YOUNG HARPER BEFORE THE DEJECTED KING
The Young Harper Before The Dejected King. So Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me David your son, who is with the flock.” Jesse took a donkey [loaded with] bread and a jug of wine and a young goat, and sent them to Saul with David his son.
DAVID ANOINTED KING
David Anointed King. The LORD said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve for Saul, when I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have chosen a king for Myself among his sons.”
THE LORD REJECTS SAUL
The Lord Rejects Saul. “I regret that I made Saul king, for he has turned away from following Me and has not carried out My commands.” Samuel was angry [over Saul’s failure] and he cried out to the LORD all night.
THE MAN WHO WROUGHT WITH GOD RESCUED
The Man Who Wrought With God Rescued. But the people said to Saul, “Must Jonathan, who has brought about this great victory in Israel, be put to death? Far from it! As the LORD lives, not one hair of his head shall fall to the ground, for he has worked with God this day.” So the people rescued Jonathan and he was not put to death.
