THE LORD REJECTS SAUL

The Lord Rejects Saul. “I regret that I made Saul king, for he has turned away from following Me and has not carried out My commands.” Samuel was angry [over Saul’s failure] and he cried out to the LORD all night.

THE MAN WHO WROUGHT WITH GOD RESCUED

The Man Who Wrought With God Rescued. But the people said to Saul, “Must Jonathan, who has brought about this great victory in Israel, be put to death? Far from it! As the LORD lives, not one hair of his head shall fall to the ground, for he has worked with God this day.” So the people rescued Jonathan and he was not put to death.

VICTORY SHADOWED BY SAUL’S ERRORS

Victory Shadowed By Saul’s Errors. But the men of Israel were hard-pressed that day, because Saul had put the people under a curse, saying, “Cursed be the man who eats food before evening, and before I have taken vengeance on my enemies.” So none of the people ate any food.

JONATHAN DEFEATS THE PHILISTINES

Jonathan Defeats the Philistines. Then Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet, his armor bearer following after him. The enemy fell before Jonathan [in combat], and his armor bearer killed some of them after him.

SAUL’S UNLAWFUL SACRIFICE

Saul’s Unlawful Sacrifice. Samuel said to Saul, “You have acted foolishly; you have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which He commanded you, for [if you had obeyed] the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever.

SAUL FIGHTS THE PHILISTINES

Saul Fights the Philistines. Saul was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty-two years over Israel.
Saul chose for himself 3,000 men of Israel; of whom 2,000 were with him in Michmash and in the hill country of Bethel, while 1,000 were with Jonathan at Gibeah of Benjamin. But he sent the rest of the people away, each one to his own tent.

SAMUEL’S WARNING CONFIRMED FROM HEAVEN

Samuel’s Warning Confirmed From Heaven. So Samuel called to the LORD [in prayer], and He sent thunder and rain that day; and all the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel.

SAMUEL’S LAST MESSAGE TO ISRAEL

Samuel’s Last Message To Israel. Then Samuel said to all Israel, “Behold, I have listened to your voice in everything that you have said to me and have appointed a king over you. And now, here is the king walking before you. As for me, I am old and gray, and here are my sons with you. I have walked before you from my childhood to this day.

SAUL DEFEATS THE AMMONITES

Saul Defeats the Ammonites. he next morning Saul put the men into three companies; and they entered the [Ammonites’] camp during the [darkness of the early] morning watch and killed the Ammonites until the heat of the day; and the survivors were scattered, and no two of them were left together.

SAUL ANOINTED AS KING

Saul Anointed as King. Then Samuel took the flask of oil and poured it on Saul’s head, kissed him, and said, “Has the LORD not anointed you as ruler over His inheritance (Israel)?
