The Death of Saul and His Sons.
DAVID AVENGES THE GIBEONITES
David Avenges the Gibeonites. There was famine in the days of David for three consecutive years; and David sought the presence (face) of the LORD [asking the reason]. The LORD replied, “It is because of Saul and his bloody house, because he put the Gibeonites to death.”
DAVID AND ZIBA A DAY THAT REVEALED CHARACTER
David And Ziba A Day That Revealed Character. Then the king said, “And where is your master’s son [Mephibosheth]?” Ziba said to the king, “Behold, he remains in Jerusalem, for he said, ‘Today the house of Israel will give me back the kingdom of my father.'”
DAVID ANOINTED KING OF JUDAH
David Anointed King of Judah. hen the men of Judah came and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. Then they told David, “It was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul.”
DAVID’S LAMENT FOR SAUL AND JONATHAN
David’s Lament for Saul and Jonathan. Then David sang this dirge (funeral song) over Saul and his son Jonathan,
and he told them to teach the sons of Judah, the song of the bow. Behold, it is written in the Book of Jashar:
“Your glory and splendor, O Israel, is slain upon your high places! How the mighty have fallen!
SAUL LISTENING TO HIS OWN DOOM
Saul Listening To His Own Doom. Moreover, the LORD will also put Israel along with you into the hands of the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me [among the dead]. Indeed, the LORD will put the army of Israel into the hands of the Philistines.”
SAUL AND THE MEDIUM OF EN-DOR
Saul and the Medium of En-dor. Then Saul said to his servants, “Find for me a woman who is a medium [between the living and the dead], so that I may go to her and ask her advice.” His servants said to him, “There is a woman who is a medium at En-dor.”
DAVID FLEES TO THE PHILISTINES
David Flees to the Philistines. But David said in his heart, “Now I will die one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than to escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will give up searching for me inside the borders of Israel, and I will escape from his hand [once and for all].”
FACING THE TRUTH AT LAST
Facing The Truth At Last. Then Saul said, “I have sinned. Return, my son David, for I will not harm you again because my life was precious in your sight this day. Hear me, I have played the fool and have done a very great wrong [to you].”
DAVID SPARES SAUL AGAIN
David Spares Saul Again. But David said to Abishai, “Do not kill him, for who can put out his hand against the LORD’S anointed [king] and be guiltless (innocent)?”
