The Anointing Oil and Incense. “Take for yourself the best spices: five hundred shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much–two hundred and fifty–of sweet-scented cinnamon, and two hundred and fifty of fragrant cane, and five hundred shekels of cinnamon blossom according to the sanctuary shekel, and a hin of olive oil. You shall make of these a holy anointing oil, a perfume mixture, the work of a perfumer; it shall be a sacred anointing oil. Exo 30:23-25

THE ANOINTING OIL AND INCENSE
Moreover, the LORD said to Moses,
“Take for yourself the best spices: five hundred shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much–two hundred and fifty–of sweet-scented cinnamon, and two hundred and fifty of fragrant cane,
and five hundred shekels of cinnamon blossom according to the sanctuary shekel, and a hin of olive oil.
You shall make of these a holy anointing oil, a perfume mixture, the work of a perfumer; it shall be a sacred anointing oil.
You shall anoint the Tent of Meeting with it, and the ark of the Testimony,
and the table [for the bread] and all its utensils, and the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense,
and the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the basin [for cleansing] and its base.
You shall consecrate them, that they may be most holy; whatever touches them must be holy (set apart for God).
You shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may serve as priests to Me.
You shall say to the Israelites, ‘This shall be a holy and sacred anointing oil, to Me [alone] throughout your generations. [Rom_8:9; 1Co_12:3]
It shall not be poured on anyone’s body, nor shall you make any like it in the same composition. It is holy, and it shall be sacred to you.
Whoever prepares any like it or puts any of it on a layman shall be cut off from his people [excluding him from the atonement made for them].'”
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Take sweet and fragrant spices–stacte, onycha, and galbanum, sweet and fragrant spices with pure frankincense; there shall be an equal amount of each–
and make incense with it, a perfume, the work of a perfumer, salted, pure and sacred.
You shall crush some of it [into a] very fine [powder], and put some of it before the Testimony in the Tent of Meeting, where I will meet with you; it shall be most holy to you.
The incense which you shall make, you shall not make in the same proportions for yourselves; it shall be holy to you for the LORD.
Whoever makes any like it, to use as perfume shall be cut off from his people [excluding him from the atonement made for them].”

THE ANOINTING OIL AND THE INCENSE
The anointing oil was extremely rich and costly. Pure myrrh; sweet cinnamon, imported probably from Sumatra or China; sweet calamus, the product of India or Mesopotamia; cassia, from Java, were the principal ingredients. Such a combination must have produced a delightful fragrance! The use of this oil was restricted to the holy service of the Tabernacle, and reminds us of “the unction of the Holy One”-i.e., the anointing by the Holy Spirit. See Lev_8:10-12 and 1Jn_2:20.
Christ is the Anointed, and He sheds the oil of joy on our heads, as one by one we yield ourselves to His service. See Act_2:33. The oil was not to be poured on “the flesh of man.” We must deny the flesh, with its affections and lusts, that we may be filled with the Spirit. Calvary before Pentecost!
The incense also was carefully prepared, and thus we are taught that prayers should not be uttered rashly or lightly; but with reverence, deliberation and forethought.
