THE CREATION OF THE WORLD

Montage of the earth, with a glowing blue atmosphere, and the moon in one frame.

The Creation of the World. In the beginning God (Elohim) created [by forming from nothing] the heavens and the earth. [Heb_11:3Gen 1:1

For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and everything that is in them, and He rested (ceased) on the seventh day. That is why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy [that is, set it apart for His purposes]. Exo 20:11

It is a sign between Me and the Israelites forever; for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He ceased and was refreshed.” Exo 31:17

  2. 1. What does the word “beginning” in the first verse of the Bible suggest?

Genesis 1:1-5

THE CREATION OF THE WORLD

In the beginning God (Elohim) created [by forming from nothing] the heavens and the earth. [Heb_11:3]

The earth was formless and void or a waste and emptiness, and darkness was upon the face of the deep [primeval ocean that covered the unformed earth]. The Spirit of God was moving (hovering, brooding) over the face of the waters.

And God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.

God saw that the light was good (pleasing, useful) and He affirmed and sustained it; and God separated the light [distinguishing it] from the darkness. [2Co_4:6]

And God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.

BEGINNINGS

All beginnings must begin with God. Always put God first. The first stone in every building, our first thought every morning, the first aim and purpose of all activity. Begin the book of the year with God, and you will end it with the glory of the New Jerusalem. At first, as in the physical creation, your heart and life may seem to be “without form and void.” Do not be discouraged, the Spirit of God is within you, brooding amid the darkness, and presently His Light will shine through. It is the blessed presence of the Lord Jesus that stirs in your heart and will presently rule your life, Joh_1:4. His Presence divides between the good and evil. You must distinguish between Christ and self. Follow the gleam, and you shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.

God’s days begin in evenings, and always end at sunset the next evening.

I. EARTH’S EARLIEST AGES (Chaps. 1-11)

A. The Creation (Chaps. 1, 2)

1:1 “In the beginning God . . . .” These first four words of the Bible form the foundation for faith. Believe these words, and you can believe all that follows in the Bible. Genesis provides the only authoritative account of creation, meaningful for people of all ages but exhaustible by no one. The divine record assumes the existence of God rather than seeking to prove it. The Bible has a special name for those who choose to deny the fact of God. That name is fool (Psa_14:1 and Psa_53:1). Just as the Bible begins with God, so He should be first in our lives.

1:2 One of several conservative interpretations of the Genesis account of creation, the creation-reconstruction view, says that between verses 1 and 2 a great catastrophe occurred, perhaps the fall of Satan (see Eze_28:11-19). This caused God’s original, perfect creation to become without form and void (t–hû wãv–hû). Since God didn’t create the earth waste and empty (see Isa_45:18), only a mighty cataclysm could explain the chaotic condition of verse 2. Proponents of this view point out that the word translated was (hãyethã) could also be translated “had become.” Thus the earth “had become waste and empty.”

The Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters, preparatory to the great creative and reconstructive acts to follow. The remaining verses describe the six days of creation and reconstruction which prepared the earth for human habitation.

1:3-5 On the first day God commanded light to shine out of darkness and established the Day and Night cycle. This act is not to be confused with the establishment of the sun, moon, and stars on the fourth day. In 2Co_4:6 the Apostle Paul draws a parallel between the original separation of light from darkness and the conversion of a sinner.

Observations from the Author of Home – Quovadisworld

God’s day started in the evening and ended the following day just before Sunset.
And God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.
