Exodus 9:1-12

THE FIFTH PLAGUE: EGYPTIAN LIVESTOCK DIE

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and tell him, ‘Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews: “Let My people go, so that they may serve Me.

But if you refuse to let them go and continue to hold them,

now hear this: the hand of the LORD will fall on your livestock which are out in the field, on the horses, the donkeys, the camels, the herds, and the flocks–a horrible plague shall come.

But the LORD will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt, so that nothing that belongs to the Israelites will die.”‘”

The LORD set a [definite] time, saying, “Tomorrow the LORD will do this thing in the land.”

And the LORD did this thing the next day, and all [kinds of] the livestock of Egypt died; but of the livestock of the Israelites, not one died.

Then Pharaoh sent [men to investigate], and not even one of the livestock of the Israelites had died. But the heart of Pharaoh was hardened [and his mind was firmly set], and he did not let the people go.

THE SIXTH PLAGUE: BOILS

Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Take handfuls of soot from the brick kiln, and let Moses throw it toward the sky in the sight of Pharaoh.

It will become fine dust over the entire land of Egypt, and it will become boils breaking out in sores on man and animal in all the land [occupied by the Egyptians].”

So they took soot from the kiln, and stood before Pharaoh; and Moses threw it toward the sky, and it became boils erupting in sores on man and animal.

The magicians (soothsayer-priests) could not stand before Moses because of the boils, for the boils were on the magicians as well as on all the Egyptians.

But the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh, and he did not listen or pay attention to them, just as the LORD had told Moses.

THE MURRAIN OF CATTLE AND THE PLAGUE OF BOILS

The plague on the cattle reminds us that the whole creation groans and travails from the effects of human sin. See Rom_8:20. But those groans are the cries of birth, not of death; and herald a happier day when the creation shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the sons of God. There is a hint of this here, for the children of Israel lost not so much as one of their cattle from this pestilence. The Lord knoweth how to deliver his own, and our religion should make a difference for the living things of our firesides and farms.

How terribly does sin affect our physical health! These boils and blains on man and beast remind us of the inevitable brand with which sin marks its slaves. Let us read again Psa_91:1-16, in the light of this passage. The souls that shelter under God’s wing, from the charmed circle of his presence, look, unharmed and unfearful, on pestilence and plague.

V. THE FIRST NINE PLAGUES (7:14–10:29)

E. The Fifth Plague—Pestilence on Livestock (9:1-7)

After Pharaoh had been warned, God sent a pestilence, possibly anthrax, that killed all the Egyptians’ livestock . . . in the field. The animals belonging to the Israelites were not affected. So it was a discriminating judgment that cannot be explained by natural phenomena. All attempts to explain the plagues on naturalistic grounds dash themselves against the rocks. Not all the animals of the Egyptians were destroyed, since some are referred to in verse 19 and some were later killed on the Passover night (Exo_12:29 b). Some fled into the houses (v. 20). So the “all” of verse 6a means “all in the field” or “all kinds.” The ram, the goat, and the bull were sacred animals in Egypt. Now their decomposing carcasses were polluting the environment.

F. The Sixth Plague—Boils (9:8-12)

When Pharaoh steeled himself still further, God caused ashes to be turned into boils on the men and animals of Egypt. Even the magicians were affected. The more Pharaoh hardened his heart, the more it became judicially hardened by God.
