SHEM’S DESCENDANTS
These are the records of the generations of Shem [from whom Abraham descended]. Shem was a hundred years old when he became the father of Arpachshad, two years after the flood.
And Shem lived five hundred years after Arpachshad was born, and he had other sons and daughters.
When Arpachshad had lived thirty-five years, he became the father of Shelah.
Arpachshad lived four hundred and three years after Shelah was born, and he had other sons and daughters.
When Shelah had lived thirty years, he became the father of Eber.
Shelah lived four hundred and three years after Eber was born, and he had other sons and daughters.
When Eber had lived thirty-four years, he became the father of Peleg.
And Eber lived four hundred and thirty years after Peleg was born, and he had other sons and daughters.
When Peleg had lived thirty years, he became the father of Reu.
And Peleg lived two hundred and nine years after Reu was born, and he had other sons and daughters.
When Reu had lived thirty-two years, he became the father of Serug.
And Reu lived two hundred and seven years after Serug was born, and he had other sons and daughters.
When Serug had lived thirty years, he became the father of Nahor.
And Serug lived two hundred years after Nahor was born, and he had other sons and daughters.
When Nahor had lived twenty-nine years, he became the father of Terah.
And Nahor lived a hundred and nineteen years after Terah was born, and he had other sons and daughters.
After Terah had lived seventy years, he became the father of Abram and Nahor and Haran [his firstborn].
TERAH’S DESCENDANTS
Now these are the records of the descendants of Terah. Terah was the father of Abram (Abraham), Nahor, and Haran; and Haran was the father of Lot.
Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans.
Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai (later called Sarah), and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah.
But Sarai was barren; she did not have a child.
Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went out together to go from Ur of the Chaldeans into the land of Canaan; but when they came to Haran [about five hundred and fifty miles northwest of Ur], they settled there.
Terah lived two hundred and five years; and Terah died in Haran.

THE GENERATIONS UNTIL ABRAM
The inwardness of the movement of Terah’s clan from Ur is given in Act_7:3. Apparently his father was unwilling for Abram to go alone on his far-pilgrimage, and so the whole family moved along the valley of the Euphrates to the famous ford of Haran. There was no other practicable way by which travelers could strike the route for Canaan. But Terah never advanced beyond that point; and it was only when his father was dead that Abram resumed his march. See Act_7:4. Let us beware lest the ties of human affection withhold us from entire obedience to the call of God. The word Hebrew means “one who has crossed over.” It was especially applicable to Abraham. See Gen_14:13. It may be that you are living on the world’s side of the Cross. Come over, though you should have to break dear associations. Be one who has passed through death to resurrection. See Col_3:1-4.

H. The Tower of Babel (Chap. 11)
11:10-25 These verses trace the line of Shem to Abram. Thus the historical record narrows from the human race to one branch of that race (the Semites) and then to one man (Abram), who becomes the head of the Hebrew nation. The rest of the OT is largely a history of this nation.
11:26-32 Abram was a mighty man of faith and one of the most important men in history. Three world religions—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—venerate him. He is mentioned in sixteen books of the OT and eleven books of the NT. His name means “exalted father” or, as changed to Abraham, “father of a multitude.”
There is a mathematical problem in this passage. Derek Kidner explains:
Terah’s age at death presents a difficulty, since it makes his eldest son 135 years old (26), whereas Abram was only 75 (Gen_12:4, with Act_7:4). One solution is to suppose Abram to have been the youngest son, born sixty years after the eldest but placed first in the list in 11:26, 27 because of his prominence (like Ephraim before Manasseh). Another is to follow the Samaritan text, which gives Terah’s age as 145 at death. This seems preferable, if only because Abram would scarcely have made the exclamation of Gen_17:17 had his own father begotten him at 130.
Ur of the Chaldeans (v. 31), in Mesopotamia, was a center of pagan idolatry. Terah and his family traveled northwest to Haran, en route to the land of Canaan.
