THE LINE OF DESCENT OF GOD’S SPOKESMEN

The Line Of Descent Of God’s Spokesmen. These are [the same] Aaron and Moses to whom the LORD said, “Bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their armies.”
They were the ones who spoke to Pharaoh king of Egypt about bringing the Israelites out of Egypt; these are [the same] Moses and Aaron. Exo 6:26-27

GOD PROMISES DELIVERANCE

The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

“Go, tell Pharaoh king of Egypt to let the children of Israel go out of his land.”

But Moses said to the LORD, “Look, [my own people] the Israelites have not listened to me; so how then will Pharaoh listen to me, for I am unskilled and inept in speech?”

Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, and gave them a command concerning the Israelites and Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring the Israelites out of the land of Egypt.

THE LINE OF DESCENT OF GOD’S SPOKESMEN

Here is an inventory of God’s jewels, in the day when He counted them up. We are reminded of Mal_3:17. Before He led forth the flock, the Good Shepherd counted them, that not one might be missing. There is a peculiar emphasis on the mention of Moses and Aaron in Exo_6:26 : “These are that Moses and Aaron.” It was as though we were led to the hole of the pit whence they were digged, and a very poor hole it was, for their parentage and estate were quite humble and ordinary. But by means of them the Almighty wrought the deliverance of His people. It was through such feeble instruments as these that He spake to the greatest monarch of the time, the mighty Pharaoh, whose remains are with us to this day. It is His method to choose the weak and foolish things to bring to naught and confound the strong and wise, that no flesh should glory in His presence.

IV. MOSES’ CONFRONTATIONS WITH PHARAOH (5:1–7:13)

A. The First Confrontation (5:1–7:6)

6:1-12 The LORD graciously answered Moses’ petulant speech first by assuring him that Pharaoh would let the Israelites go because he would be compelled by God’s strong hand. Then He reminded Moses that He had revealed Himself to the patriarchs as El-Shaddai or God Almighty, not primarily as Jehovah, the personal name of the covenant-keeping God. The thought here seems to be that He would now reveal Himself as Lord in a new way—that is, in new power in delivering His people. He had made a covenant and was about to fulfill it by freeing the Israelites from Egypt and bringing them into the Promised Land. Notice the seven “I will’s” in verses 6-8. The name “Jehovah” had been used before, but now it took on new significance. Notice 25 personal pronouns used by God in these verses, emphasizing what He had done, was doing, and would do. Moses seems to have missed the point, being still occupied with his own inadequacy. After further reassurance, he did obey the word of the Lord (chap. 7). “Uncircumcised lips” in verse 12 and 30 means faltering speech. Moses did not consider himself a great speaker.

6:13-30 The genealogies in verses 14-25 are limited to Reuben, Simeon, and Levi, the first three sons born to Jacob. The author did not want to give a complete genealogy but only to trace the line to Moses and Aaron. So he quickly passed over Reuben and Simeon to come to the priestly tribe.
