Now the LORD appeared to Abraham by the terebinth trees of Mamre [in Hebron], while he was sitting at the tent door in the heat of the day.
When he raised his eyes and looked up, behold, three men were standing [a little distance] from him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed down [with his face] to the ground,
and Abraham said, “My lord, if now I have found favor in your sight, please do not pass by your servant [without stopping to visit].
Please let a little water be brought [by one of my servants] and [you may] wash your feet, and recline and rest comfortably under the tree.
And I will bring a piece of bread to refresh and sustain you; after that you may go on, since you have come to your servant.” And they replied, “Do as you have said.”
So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah, and said, “Quickly, get ready three measures of fine meal, knead it and bake cakes.”
Abraham also ran to the herd and brought a calf, tender and choice, and he gave it to the servant [to butcher], and he hurried to prepare it.
Then he took curds and milk and the calf which he had prepared, and set it before the men; and he stood beside them under the tree while they ate.
Then they said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “There, in the tent.”
He said, “I will surely return to you at this time next year; and behold, Sarah your wife will have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door, which was behind him. [Rom_9:9-12]
Now Abraham and Sarah were old, well advanced in years; she was past [the age of] childbearing.
So Sarah laughed to herself [when she heard the LORD’S words], saying, “After I have become old, shall I have pleasure and delight, my lord (husband) being also old?” [1Pe_3:6]
And the LORD asked Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh [to herself], saying, ‘Shall I really give birth [to a child] when I am so old?’
Is anything too difficult or too wonderful for the LORD? At the appointed time, when the season [for her delivery] comes, I will return to you and Sarah will have a son.” [Mat_19:26]
Then Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh”; because she was afraid. And He (the LORD) said, “No, but you did laugh.”

ABRAHAM ENTERTAINS HEAVENLY VISITORS
The Son of God is the central figure here. He loves the homes of men. It has ever been His wont to visit the homes and hearts of those who love him. See Pro_8:31. Abraham knew well that the High and Lofty One, who inhabits eternity, had come to dwell with him. Others might see only three men, but he recognized his divine friend, addressing Him as “My Lord;” and when the two angels went forward alone to do their awful work in Sodom, he entered into close converse with the wondrous central figure, who remained with him still. He gave personal service, and so did Sarah. They gave their very best, fine, tender, and good. And in their love the Lord found satisfaction and rest. But remember that He still stands at the door and knocks. Ponder Joh_14:23; Rev_3:20. Christ tells His secrets to those He loves. His proposals and promises are so great that we can almost laugh with incredulity, but the question of Gen_18:14 is answered by Jer_32:17. Reckon on God’s faithfulness; He cannot fail those who trust Him.

18:1-15 Shortly after the events of chapter 17, three men appeared to Abraham. Actually two of them were angels and the other was the LORD Himself. With typical Middle Eastern hospitality, Abraham and Sarah entertained the angels unawares (Heb_13:2) and One who was greater than angels. When Sarah overheard the Lord say that she would have a child within a year, her laughter betrayed her unbelief. She was rebuked with the searching question, “Is anything too hard for the LORD?” But the promise was repeated in spite of her doubting (vv. 9-15). Heb_11:11 indicates that Sarah was basically a woman of faith in spite of this momentary lapse.
