Exodus 14:10-20

PILLARS OF CLOUD AND FIRE

As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up and saw the Egyptians marching after them, and they were very frightened; so the Israelites cried out to the LORD.

Then they said to Moses, “Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What is this that you have done to us by bringing us out of Egypt?

Did we not say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians?’ For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians [as slaves] than to die in the wilderness.”

Then Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid! Take your stand [be firm and confident and undismayed] and see the salvation of the LORD which He will accomplish for you today; for those Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see again.

The LORD will fight for you while you [only need to] keep silent and remain calm.”

The LORD said to Moses, “Why do you cry to Me? Tell the sons of Israel to move forward [toward the sea].

As for you, lift up your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, so that the sons of Israel may go through the middle of the sea on dry land.

As for Me, hear this: I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they will go in [the sea] after them; and I will be glorified and honored through Pharaoh and all his army, and his war-chariots and his horsemen.

And the Egyptians shall know [without any doubt] and acknowledge that I am the LORD, when I am glorified and honored through Pharaoh, through his war-chariots and his charioteers.”

The angel of God, who had been going in front of the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them. The pillar of the cloud moved from in front and stood behind them.

So it came between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Israel. It was a cloud along with darkness [even by day to the Egyptians], but it gave light by night [to the Israelites]; so one [army] did not come near the other all night.

Exodus 14:10-20

THE MURMURING PEOPLE ENCOURAGED

We cannot wonder at their consternation. Before, the surf of the beach; behind, the serried ranks of Egypt’s chivalry; on either side, impassable cliffs. It seemed a veritable death-trap. But Moses reckoned confidently on the salvation of God. All they had to do, in the first instance, was to stand still and see it. It is hard to stand still when the situation becomes acute. If you don’t know what to do, stand still until you do; it is God’s business to direct and defend the believing soul. Let God do the fighting, Exo_14:14. This Angel, Stephen tells us, was our Lord, Act_7:38. He always puts Himself between us and our strong enemies. Note Exo_14:19. The ordinary man puts circumstances between himself and God, but the consecrated soul inserts God between himself and circumstances. When God says Forward! He will open the path and lead His people, as a shepherd leads His flock, by a way they know not.

VII. THE EXODUS FROM EGYPT (12:31–15:21)

Exodus 14:10-20

B. Crossing the Red Sea (Chap. 14)

14:10-14 When the children of Israel raised their eyes and saw the Egyptian army marching after them they were naturally petrified, but wisely cried out to the LORD. Yet they quickly complained to the Lord’s leader, Moses, as they had once before (Exo_5:21), saying it would have been better for them to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness. This was sheer unbelief on their part, and not the last instance, by any means. No longer timid, Moses told them to “stand still and see the salvation of the LORD.”

14:15-18 One of the greatest miracles in all history was about to occur:

The LORD instructed Moses, . . . “Tell the children of Israel to go forward. But lift up your rod, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it. And the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.”

Regarding God’s hardening of the hearts of the Egyptians, and gaining honor over Pharaoh and over all his military might, Matthew Henry writes:

It is a righteous thing with God to put those under the impressions of his wrath who have long resisted the influences of his grace. It is spoken in a way of triumph over this obstinate and presumptuous rebel.

14:19-28 The Angel of God (Christ, see Judges 6 for discussion) took His place as a pillar of cloud at the rear of the host of Israel, protecting them from the Egyptians. The pillar of cloud provided light for the Israelites and darkness for the Egyptians. At Moses’ bidding the Red Sea parted, forming two walls of water with a path of dry land between. The Israelites passed through safely, but when Pharaoh’s army tried to follow, the LORD . . . troubled them and disabled their chariots so that they drove them with difficulty. Before they could retreat, the sea closed in on them at Moses’ command. Not so much as one of them remained. The same faith that opened up the Red Sea enables us to do the impossible when we are moving forward in the will of God.

14:29-31 The crossing of the Red Sea is set forth as the greatest display of God’s power in the OT, but the greatest power of all time is that which raised Christ from the dead.
