THE PEOPLE WARNED NOT TO APPROUCH THE MOUNT

The People Warned Not To Approach The Mount. Then the LORD spoke to Moses, “Go down, warn the people, so that they do not break through [the barriers around the mountain] to the LORD to see [Me], and many of them perish [as a result].  Exo 19:21

Exodus 19:16-25

ISRAEL AT MOUNT SINAI

So it happened on the third day, when it was morning, that there were thunder and flashes of lightning, and a thick cloud was on the mountain, and a very loud blast was sounded on a ram’s horn, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled.

Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood and presented themselves at the foot of the mountain.

Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke because the LORD descended upon it in fire; its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked violently.

And it happened, as the blast of the ram’s horn grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and God answered him with [a voice of] thunder. [Deu_4:12]

The LORD came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain; and the LORD called Moses to the top of the mountain, and he went up.

Then the LORD spoke to Moses, “Go down, warn the people, so that they do not break through [the barriers around the mountain] to the LORD to see [Me], and many of them perish [as a result].

Also have the priests who approach the LORD consecrate (sanctify, set apart) themselves [for My sacred purpose], or else the LORD will break forth [in judgment] against them [and destroy them].”

Moses said to the LORD, “The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai, because You warned us, saying, ‘Set barriers around the mountain and consecrate it.'”

Then the LORD said to him, “Go down and come up again, you and Aaron with you; but do not let the priests and the people break through [the barriers] to come up to the LORD, or He will break forth [in judgment] against them [and destroy them].”

So Moses went down to the people and told them [again about God’s warning].

THE PEOPLE WARNED NOT TO APPROACH THE MOUNT

The holiness of God was taught in object lessons. The people must wash their garments, the mount must be fenced in, not a beast might graze upon the slopes, not a hand might touch the holy soil. Moses must twice descend to warn the people, Exo_19:14; Exo_19:21; Exo_19:25. Only he and Aaron might ascend. All was done to convince the people of the vast distance that intervened between themselves and God. It was the awe engendered by such provisions, and which pervaded the ancient dispensation, that led Peter to cry, when the divine glory of Jesus smote upon him: “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”

Dare to believe that beneath every cloud of soul-anguish, bereavement, and trial, you will find the burning love of God. Clouds and darkness may be round about Him, but faithfulness and truth, judgment and mercy are at the foundation of His throne. Listen to the voice that bids you enter the pavilion, and remember Heb_12:18, etc.

VIII. THE JOURNEY TO SINAI (15:22–18:27)

IX. THE GIVING OF THE LAW (Chaps. 19–24)

A. Preparation for Revelation (Chap. 19)

19:10-20 The people were told to prepare for a revelation from God by washing their clothes and refraining from sexual intercourse. This was designed to teach them the necessity for purity in the presence of God. Mount Sinai was a forbidding place. Neither mankind nor animals were to touch it on penalty of death. A transgressor was not to be followed onto the mount but was to be shot through with an arrow or stoned from a distance. Only Moses and Aaron were allowed to ascend (v. 24), and then only when the ram’s horn sounded. The mount was covered with a thick cloud; there were thunderings and lightnings, fire and smoke; the whole mountain quaked greatly. All this spoke of the terrors of meeting God, especially on the basis of lawkeeping.
19:21-25 The LORD repeated His warning to Moses that the people should not touch the mount. Moses at first thought it unnecessary to remind the people but later obeyed. The priests in verses 22 and 24 were probably the firstborn sons.
