Matthew 26:14-16

Judas to Betray Jesus

Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests,
And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.
And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him.

Luke 22:3

Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.
And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them.
And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money.
And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude.

Frederick Brotherton Meyer, a contemporary and friend of D. L. Moody and A. C. Dixon, was a Baptist pastor and evangelist in England involved in ministry and inner city mission work on both sides of the Atlantic presents it to us this way regarding Matthew 26:14-16

A FALSE FRIEND EXPOSED

While Mary sacrificed a large sum of money to show her love to Jesus, Judas sold Him for the hire of a slave. See Zec_11:12 “And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver.”

SELLING OR SERVING THE MASTER

The world seemed in arms against the greatest Lover of souls that had ever trod earth’s soil. Satan entered the heart of Judas, for it was his hour, and he gathered all his strength for one last prodigious effort to overthrow the Son of man and thwart His sublime purpose of redemption. Judas, one of the inner circle, did not hesitate to choose thirty pieces of silver rather than love, purity, compassion, as they were incarnate in the Son of man. The religious leaders of the age also eagerly caught at their chance.
In the meanwhile the Lord girded Himself for the conflict by gathering to His heart the remainder of the apostolic band, though none of them really understood. The arrangement of the man with the waterpot was evidently to elude arrest during the supper, as Judas could not inform his accomplices beforehand of the selected supper room. Remember that Jesus asks each of us for the guest chamber of our heart! Ask Him, not to be as a wayfaring man who tarries for the night, but to abide always.

William MacDonald (1917-2007) Believer’s Bible Commentary on Matthew 26:4-16.

The Treachery of Judas

26:14, 15 Then one of the twelve—one of the disciples who had lived with the Lord Jesus, traveled with Him, seen His miracles, heard His incomparable teaching, and witnessed the miracle of a sinless life—one whom Jesus could call “my familiar friend … who ate my bread” (Psa_41:9)—it was that one who lifted up his heel against the Son of God. Judas Iscariot went to the chief priests and agreed to sell his Master for thirty pieces of silver. The priests paid him on the spot—the contemptible total of about fifteen dollars.
It is striking to note the contrast between the woman who anointed Jesus at Simon’s home and Judas. She valued the Savior highly. Judas valued Him lightly.
26:16 And so the one who had received nothing but kindness from Jesus went out to arrange his part of the dreadful bargain.

Comments by Webmaster:

Not only was Judas one of the inner circle of Jesus, but so was the Jews, they were Gods “Priests” , supposed to be from the inner circle, see Exodus 28 how religious these Priests were supposed to be, religious Jews teaching the Jews of the  day.
How many “priests” stand in the pulpits and in front of thousands of churches and people today. Luke 22:5 Tells us;” And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money. “ Satan entered Judas surnamed Iscariot, Satan was well established in the chief priests and captains.

"And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert grafted in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;  Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee."  Rom 11:17 -18
