Exodus 12:29-36

THE TENTH PLAGUE: DEATH OF THE FIRSTBORN

Now it happened at midnight that the LORD struck every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the prisoner who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of the cattle.

Pharaoh got up in the night, he and all his servants and all the Egyptians, and there was a great cry [of heartache and sorrow] in Egypt, for there was no house where there was not someone dead.

Then he called for Moses and Aaron at night and said, “Get up, get out from among my people, both you and the Israelites; and go, serve the LORD, as you said.

Take both your flocks and your herds, as you have said, and go, and [ask your God to] bless me also.”

THE EXODUS

The Egyptians [anxiously] urged the people [to leave], to send them out of the land quickly, for they said, “We will all be dead.”

So the people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneading bowls being bound up in their clothes on their shoulders.

Now the Israelites had acted in accordance with the word of Moses; and they had asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and articles of gold, and clothing.

The LORD gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they gave them what they asked. And so they plundered the Egyptians [of those things].

Exodus 12:29-36

THE FIRST-BORN OF EGYPT SLAIN

It was night, the time for peace, rest and silence. None anticipated evil, unless some few among the Egyptians had begun to believe in the veracity of Moses, that man of God. Suddenly, without warning, there was death everywhere. Death can enter the palace, elude the sentinels, pass locked doors, and smite the son of Pharaoh; while the lowly obscurity of the woman grinding corn and the captive in the dungeon, will not save them from his blow. There is no difference between us all in the fact of our sinnership, or the inevitableness of penalty, unless redeemed, as Israel was, by sacrifice.

Pharaoh’s surrender was complete. Children? Yes! Flocks and herds? Yes! There was also a great popular uprising, and the people readily supplied the Israelites with whatever they asked-their wages for long unpaid servitude. They went forth as a triumphant host, “more than conquerors” through Him who loved them.

A. Flight toward the Sea (12:31–13:22)

12:31-37 Verse 31 does not necessarily mean that Moses met Pharaoh face-to-face (see Exo_10:29). What a servant says or does is often ascribed to his master. Moses had predicted that Pharaoh’s servants would beg the Israelites to go (Exo_11:8).

The Israelites journeyed . . . to Succoth, a district in Egypt, not to be confused with the town of that name in Palestine (Gen_33:17). The Egyptians were only too glad to give their wealth to the Israelites and be rid of them. For the Hebrews, it was only just recompense for all the labor they had given to Pharaoh. It provided them with equipment for the journey and materials for the service of God. About six hundred thousand men left Egypt, in addition to women and children. The exact number of men was 603,550 (Exo_38:26). The total number of Israelites was about two million.
