36. How was water provided for the thirsty and victory for the attacked?

Exodus 17:1-16

WATER FROM THE ROCK

Then all the congregation of the children of Israel moved on from the Wilderness of Sin by stages, according to the commandment of the LORD, and camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.

Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water so we may [have something to] drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you tempt the LORD and try His patience?”

ut the people were thirsty for water; and the people murmured against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us up from Egypt to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?”

So Moses cried out to the LORD for help, saying, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.”

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Pass before the people and take with you some of the elders of Israel; and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.

Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb; there you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may [have something to] drink.” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. [1Co_10:4]

He named the place [where this miracle occurred] Massah (test) and Meribah (contention) because of the quarreling of the sons of Israel, and because they tested the [patience of the] LORD, saying, “Is the LORD among us, or not?”

ISRAEL DEFEATS AMALEK

Then Amalek [and his people] came and fought with Israel at Rephidim.

So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose men for us and go out, fight against Amalek [and his people]. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.”

So Joshua did as Moses said, and fought with Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the hilltop.

Now when Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and when he lowered his hand [due to fatigue], Amalek prevailed.

But Moses’ hands were heavy and he grew tired. So they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. Then Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side and one on the other side; so it was that his hands were steady until the sun set.

So Joshua overwhelmed and defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write this in the book as a memorial and recite it to Joshua, that I will utterly wipe out the memory of Amalek [and his people] from under heaven.” [1Sa_15:2-8]

And Moses built an altar and named it The LORD Is My Banner;

saying, “The LORD has sworn [an oath]; the LORD will have war against [the people of] Amalek from generation to generation.”

WATER FROM THE ROCK; VICTORY OVER AMALEK

From the smitten rock flowed the water for the thirsty hosts. So the Rock of Ages was smitten, and from His riven side has flowed out blood and water, for the sin and thirst of the world. He that eateth His flesh and drinketh His blood, spiritually, hath eternal life. Such refreshment is in preparation for warfare. Then came Amalek! When our physical needs are satisfied, there is always the fear of Amalek, who, in the typology of Scripture, stands for the flesh. Between this wilderness tribe and Israel the conflict was long and bitter. The old Adam, said Luther, is too strong for the young Melanchthon. But let the Lord fight for you! Lift up your hands with opened palms to Him; He will not fail. See R.V. margin and Mat_1:21. But guard the rear, and ask that Jesus shall beset you behind as well as before. See Deu_25:17-18.

VIII. THE JOURNEY TO SINAI (15:22–18:27)

C. Rephidim (Chap. 17)

17:1-7 At Rephidim the people contended with Moses because of a shortage of water. The Lord instructed Moses to proceed to the general area known as Horeb (meaning the desolate place) and to strike the rock with his rod. When he did, water flowed from the rock—a picture of the Holy Spirit, who was given on the day of Pentecost as the fruit of Christ’s being struck on Calvary. Massah (tempting or testing) was where they tried or tested God. Meribah (chiding or strife) was where they strove with Moses.

17:8-16 Joshua (Jehovah is salvation) now comes on the stage for the first time. As the servant of Moses, he fought against Amalek in Rephidim. As long as Moses held up his hand in intercession and in dependance on God, the Israelites had the margin of victory. But when Moses’ hand sagged, Amalek gained the ascendancy. Amalek, a descendant of Esau, is a type of the flesh—that is, the evil, corrupt, Adamic nature of man. Observe the following parallels between the flesh and Amalek: (1) It presents itself after the Holy Spirit is given at conversion to fight against the Spirit; (2) The LORD will have war with the flesh from generation to generation; (3) It is never eradicated from the believer till death or the Rapture of the church. (4) Two means of triumph over the flesh are suggested—prayer and the Word.

According to the ancient Jewish historian Josephus, Hur was the husband of Miriam, Moses’ sister. This same Hur was later left with Aaron to supervise the people while Moses was on Mount Sinai (Exo_24:14).

The-LORD-Is-My-Banner (Heb. YHWH Nissî) is a compound name of Jehovah.
